Jill Calvert

Registered Psychotherapist, M.A., R.P.

So many of us have internalized messages of worthlessness, helplessness, and fear-based living. Experiences of feeling rejected, diminished, abused, and/or uncared for in early years can lead to present-day self-attack and self-abandonment. You may feel as though you are uniquely unworthy, and must earn the love and acceptance of others through perfectionism, people-pleasing, or submission.

My goal is to offer you a calming, compassionate space where you can explore healing through relationships, welcome all parts of yourself, and tap into your innate strengths. I believe psychotherapy is a collaborative journey that entails identifying unhelpful patterns in order to reinforce new ones, processing past hurts, and determining how you can better live in accordance with your life philosophy and values. In my work, I strive to connect with each client’s unique story, and tailor my approach to their needs. I am passionate about helping clients unlearn that there is something ‘wrong’ with them, and access their natural capacity for self-compassion and self-alignment.

Starting therapy can be your first step on a journey towards finally accepting the wounded–but lovable–person you have always been, and moving forward in your life with a sense of connection with yourself and others.

More than just my work:

I am a lover of all things culinary, and in my spare time I like to challenge myself to cook or bake something new, or unwind by watching my favourite cooking competition shows. I’ve thrown out many cakes and cookies over the years! I am also a reader, and my recent genre of interest is science fiction.

Favourite quote: “Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”

Life is a journey full of experiences, some of those experiences can be most beautiful and rewarding and some can be very challenging and draining. During the challenging times, we may find ourselves feeling overwhelmed, tired, confused, anxious and lost. It is during these challenging times that we need to seek help, and if that is where you have found yourself, give yourself credit for seeking support and counselling.

It is through therapy that we can find our way again and make sense of the world, our life and regain the strength and courage to continue on our journey. Nothing in life is constant and as individuals, we have to learn to adjust to change and embrace it with courage and hope.

I have been working with children, youth and families for over 20 years. It has been my privilege and a great honour to help families and children create a better life. I specialize in working with children, youth and families who have experienced loss, anxiety, depression, addictions, domestic violence, self-harming behaviours, infidelity, separation and divorce.

I offer a safe, empathetic, non-judgmental, confidential and nurturing space, where you can share and explore your challenges, trauma and difficulties. Building a trusting relationship that will empower you to take control of your life by unraveling any confused thoughts, feelings and beliefs, helping you to rebuild your strength, courage, and a greater understanding of yourself, your life and your relationships.

I work collaboratively with each individual drawing on many different modalities and approaches. Each individual is unique and as such my approach will be tailored to your special needs. In general, I practice from the eclectic approach of modalities incorporating: attachment focused therapy, cognitive behavior, trauma informed practice, solution focused therapy and mindfulness.

I am fluent in English and former Yugoslavian languages.

I treasure and value the opportunity to work with people and approach all individuals I support from a place of openness, empathy, and curiosity. Each of us is unique, have had positive and negative life experiences that have contributed to who we are, and have the ability to heal from what is keeping us from being healthy, happy and at peace.

My goal as a therapist is to create a safe, supportive and non-judgmental space as we build our relationship together to allow for exploration of your thoughts, feelings and lived experiences as you work towards healing and growth.

With over sixteen years of experience working in mental health and addictions, I can assist you with variety of areas of concern including low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, grief and loss, suicidal ideation, and trauma. To assist you with these issues and develop goals to work on, I incorporate an eclectic approach of modalities including Cognitive-Behavioural therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Narrative, Solution Focused therapy, and Strength Based, and will be fully certified in EMDR in April 2022.

In our work together, I want to acknowledge the courage and strength it took for you to reach out for support. In our work together, we can build on the knowledge and skills you possess to help create acceptance in your life for the things you cannot change and work towards changing the things you do have control over in an effort to build the life you want for yourself.

I am a registered social worker, with experience in private therapy, inpatient care for adolescents, and a drop-in centre for homeless and at-risk youth. I believe strongly in the power of compassion, helping to identify strengths and goals, and working to facilitate my clients’ self-empowerment. Within sessions I mostly utilize Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and Mindfulness-based therapy. My primary focuses are trauma, depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and self-esteem issues.

In session, I aim to prioritize the client’s comfort by providing a safe non-judgmental space to talk, cry, laugh, or vent, meeting the client where they are in their process of healing, listening with open ears, and of course literal comfort - come as you are!

When it comes to healthy practices in my own life I enjoy reading, practicing yoga, getting out in nature, exercising, baking, and travelling.
